you

Took a group of teenagers, students, to look at and discuss Arman's "Condition of Woman 1" sculpture. The usual reading of that work is that the artist, a man, was pretty angry with women at the time that he made it. Put it this way, it's hard to read it as respectful of women.

Got into a discussion and one boy talked about how the sculpture is about how dirty women are. It seemed that he kind of agreed with the artist on that point. Bit scary - but it happens...

When we moved on to another artwork in the gallery, the teacher came up to me and said,

That's Muslim boys for you.

I said, misogyny is part of all cultures. The artist anyway is European and not Muslim...

Aside from being annoyed that of course she saw the discussion in terms of Muslim stereotypes, Muslim men are sexist (like non-Muslim men aren't!) instead of seeing that some of the other (Muslim) boys were saying how wrong the artwork was... but she had also earlier asked me to go easy on them because they are fasting. I didn't say that of course they are fasting and it's still ok to walk around a gallery thinking and talking while you're fasting... or that the only difference between now and other times of the year is that they should be on best behaviour because it's a Holy month...
