I was working with a group of people from a variety of backgrounds. One of them was a small old man, white and with an accent. For some reason I thought he was Jewish and I felt warm towards him.
He was taking ages over an exercise and everyone else in the group urged him to finish, calling his name, 'Mustafa'. So he's not Jewish. He's not 'us', he's 'them'. Suddenly I was self-conscious about my affection for him...
