Working with a group of Somali young men, they have turned from long strapping black young men - Giacometti figures faintly haunting - who lurked about the Center into human beings that I care about. It's been interesting. At first I had to look hard to see their individuality. I mostly experinced them as a mass and over the summer they became, not just a mss and not simply individuals that have their own stories but REAL people. They became people like me - not Somalis, not black men, not refugees with sad histories but G, T, N...
