them

I was sitting in Hastings, with a person I hardly know, who had kindly made us tea and apple pie. I was enjoying her hospitality. Being new to Hastings herself and all of us being from London, we asked her about it. Conversation swung round to "Asylum Seekers" and how Hastings is a "dumping ground" for them. I didn't challenge her. It was her home. But it struck me as ironic that as a Chinese born person, I assumed she uderstood the right of freedom of movement, afterall, she had depended on it in her life; freedom of migration, or at least the need for refuge when your rights are violated in your own country.

It's all too easy for me to assume that 'raced' people are politicized... or whatever you might call it...
