I took a story I'd written to a tutor for some feedback. She pointed out the problems of writing a story somewhere you've never been.
I realised what I'd done. The story could have been set anywhere that isn't exactly winning in the globalisation process.
But I placed it in Africa.
In Mali,
Exotic Timbuktu.
And for all the stereotypes of Africa - poor, degraded, exploited...
