them

I had a long chat with a prominent black artist as we took a train home. We chatted about institutional racism, especially as seen in one of the national institutions I work at. She told me about a black curator who had a nervous breakdown because of the culture there. Who had even suffered death-threats by employees at this venerable institution.

Now I did promise never to include heresay in this diary - because heresay is the way that hatred and misunderstanding is promulgated. But I'll put that anedote in rather than talk about her direct experience because it would identify her and the institution too readily.

It is also an answer to those people I have talked to over the past months who directly tell me, or imply, that I am too zealous, or wrong, to claim that the culture of those places is (institutionally) racist.
