Was chatting to a young friend who is Bengali.
She said to me, is it ok to use the word "black"? I usually end up whispering it because I feel bad about it.
I said it was fine. In America you say African American, but here you say 'black'. I wondered why it would make her feel bad. Was it something about how it is translated from Bengali? or connotations in the community?
I said, speak to a black person and ask them what they prefer.
