Chatting to a young friend about where she might go to University. She mentioned 2 - one in a big city, the other in a town which is nearly all white. She is not at all a political person, but I pointed out to her that she would be the only black face if she chose the town. But, I said, that might not matter to her. She said, it would be like here, meaning the gallery where we were. I laughed because the gallery is overwhelmingly white but "terribly concerned to widen participation / diversify its audience". She added, that she's a youth worker and works with people who like art, but they ask her why she wants to go there [to the gallery]? what does it have to do with her?
