It constantly annoys and amazes me that people who are concerned with identity politics and racism can resort to stereotyping and racism themselves. (yes this is anger) I know that just because you're a victim of racism yourself doesn't mean that you won't believe racist things of other groups or say or do racist things. I know that's what this diary is about!!! But when you're working in an environment that is meant to be thinking and critiquing society to then resort to dis-information and stereotypes...
Firstly and this is not the first time I have written this here, I am very sick and tired of the idea that all Jews came to Britain as refugees from WW2, the Nazi Holocaust... like that's the only fact or moment in history anyone cares to remember about Jewish people...The vast majority of Jewish poeple in this country came to escape the Russian Pogroms in the 19th century. There was a commmunity of Sephardi Jews who have been settled in London for over 400 years and prior to Richard the First there was a thriving population of medieval Jewish people as well... But anyway....
When people of minority ethnic backgrounds echo the crass anti-semisitic views - Jews are rich , their community must have done something to get so far... whatever - it is particularly depressing and when this comes from the mouth of someone who works around steroetypes of her community...
I tried to set some her historical 'facts' straight but I could tell she wasn't listening. She'll forget them tomorrow because the stereoeype is one she got from her family and for some reason, she likes it and needs to hold onto it.
