B took off her headscarf and we suddenly saw what amazing hair she has. P asked me whether my hair would be like that if it grew long. I said no way. I have thin, fine hair which can only just grow to my shoulders. But it made me realise how much I assume people know about me. I kind of assume that things like hair-knowledge are universal. Anyone with 'European' hair can tell my hair is far from luscious long locks like the women in adverts, if they thought about it... but that's clearly not true for everyone. I guess I just assumed that every kind of person with every kind of hair would know that not every white person has the kind of hair in shampoo ads... On the other hand I didn't think about the idea that there are bound to be differences in 'African' hair as well. I just assumed that all 'African' hair is the same.
