Went to see the "Medicine Man" exhibition at the British Museum - about Wellcome, a par excellence example of a Victorian collector - indiscriminate, magpie-like, context-less.
Each piece was shown in a context-free, free-floating void of cultural information - which made each object just a curio or an aesthetic piece.
But because he collected from across the globe including Britain the treatment of the objects was evenhanded and not particualry biased or Anglo/Euro-centric...
except for the photos. One display case of ethnographic photos by various gentleman photographers who never thought to turn the mechanical gaze on themselves. funny. I think it showed the curatorial bias even more than Wellcome's.
