them

Sometimes I don't add things at the time because I only realise the significance of them a few days or even weeks later. Like this one...

A relative was the consultant doctor for a past Australian Prime Minister on one occasion. He has told me this story many times, telling me again recently. He usually prefaces the story with, I don't care but... or it doesn't effect me but...

Apparently this Prime Minister came in for consultation and made Jewish jokes the whole way through. I have talked about this before with the relative, who both has a Jewish sounding name and looks Jewish, explaining that when we are afraid we often resort to stereotypes and racism. That he does it as well (and so do I). And sometimes a person who is rarely racist in life comes out acting completely offensively in a situation of fear and/or powerlessness, like being at the doctors for a potentially life-threatening disease. It might not reflect on his 'usual' behaviour.

I have talked about this incident many times with the relative. He brings it up almost every time we meet, always saying how it doesn't effect him. I guess no matter how many times you tell yourself it doesn't matter, it does....
